A crumpled door is a crumpled door. What sits underneath the floor is what changes the work, the timeline, and often the estimate.

Not every auto body shop is set up to take one in. Handling an EV after a collision requires trained technicians, insulated tools, a designated storage area, and access to the manufacturer’s repair documentation for that specific model. Shops without those things generally decline the job or subcontract portions of it. Asking the question before you tow the car somewhere saves a second tow later.

The battery pack sits low and flat across most of the underbody, which affects how the vehicle behaves in a crash. Weight distribution changes. Structural reinforcement around the pack is heavier than what you find in a comparable gas model. Damage that would be routine on a sedan, like a scrape along the rocker panel, becomes a question of whether the pack enclosure was compromised.

How Technicians Make an Electric Vehicle Safe to Work On

Before anyone touches a panel, the vehicle goes through a high-voltage disconnect procedure the manufacturer specifies. That means removing a service plug or disconnecting the pack contactors, waiting a set period for the inverter capacitors to discharge, then verifying with a meter that no residual voltage remains in the system. The wait is not optional. Some manufacturers list five minutes, others ten or more, and the number appears in the service manual for a reason.

Shops that do this regularly mark the vehicle and keep it isolated until the work is finished. Orange cabling under the car identifies the high-voltage circuits, and those lines route differently in every model, which is why the documentation matters more than general experience.

Battery Damage, Storage Rules and Insurance Decisions

If the pack took an impact, the shop cannot simply inspect it visually and move on. Damaged cells can fail hours or days after a collision through thermal runaway, a reaction in which one cell overheats, releases energy into its neighbours, and spreads through the pack. Manufacturers respond to this risk with quarantine requirements. A vehicle with a suspect battery often has to sit outdoors, a set distance from structures and other cars, sometimes for a week or longer, while the pack is monitored.

That storage requirement surprises owners. It also affects claims. Replacement packs are expensive, and when an older EV needs a replacement, the repair cost can approach or exceed the vehicle’s value, pushing the claim toward a total loss. Insurers know this. Owners often do not, until the adjuster calls.

Not all battery contact means replacement, though. Some manufacturers permit module-level repair. Others authorize only whole-pack replacement. Policy varies by brand and by model year, and a shop that works across marques will check rather than assume.

Questions to Ask Before Authorizing Repairs on an EV

  • Has the shop completed manufacturer or industry training for high-voltage vehicles, and for your brand in particular
  • Where will the vehicle be stored if the battery needs monitoring, and who pays for that time
  • Will a diagnostic scan be run before and after the repair to check for stored fault codes across the drive and safety systems
  • Does the repair plan include recalibrating cameras, radar and parking sensors after panels come off
  • Is the shop sourcing original equipment structural parts, since aluminum and high-strength sections around the pack rarely permit substitutes

Aluminum construction adds another layer. Many electric models use aluminum extensively in the body structure, and aluminum repair requires separate tooling, a dedicated work area to prevent steel dust contamination, and welding equipment set up for the material. Mixing steel and aluminum debris in the same bay creates corrosion problems that can later show up as bubbling under paint.

Paint work has its own wrinkle. Curing temperatures in a bake booth are limited when the pack is still in the car, since batteries have upper temperature thresholds well below what a standard cycle reaches. Shops handle this with lower-temperature cycles and longer bake times, or by removing the pack first. Either approach adds hours to the schedule.

The practical takeaway is simple enough. Ask about training, ask about storage, and ask to see the repair plan in writing before the work begins. Facilities that handle collision repair, refinishing, diagnostic scanning and ADAS calibration in one location tend to move faster on these vehicles because nothing has to be shipped out mid-repair. Written estimates cost nothing, and with an EV the estimate itself tells you a great deal about whether the shop has done this before.
